Googlers didn't hold back in this new piece "Optimizing your website for generative AI features on Google Search" but still in the myth busting section they didn't exact mention - self promotional listicles. There are some other bits in this piece which sort of directionally point to listicles but would have been cool if they exact mentioned self promotional listicles & busted the myth -> classified it as spamming.

The future of search is a conversation, not a link. Google’s announcement at I/O about the change coming to search shouldn’t surprise you. Users don’t want 10 blue results. They want one good answer. AI gives them that. Which means the old funnel — impression → click → landing page → conversion It’s collapsing into a single moment: *Does the AI mention you, or doesn’t it?* If yes, you exist. If no, you don’t. That’s the whole game now.

This Is NO GOOD! Google Ads Was Built On 3 Core Pillars. 1. RELEVANCE, 2.CONTROL & 3. Results. These New Updates To The T&C Basically ENTIRELY REMOVE #1 & #2 And Make #3 Iffy At Best. The Old Terms And Conditions Said That Google Could : Format ads Automatically, Offer Optional Tools To Generate Targets, Ads, Or Destinations. BUT You Could AWLAYS Opt In Or Opt Out Of These Features. Even If They Were EXTREMELY HIDDEN. NOW Though The Terms Say: "Customer Authorizes Google And Its Affiliates To Serve Ads, Including Through The Use Of Automated Program Features To Format, Select, Or Generate Targets, Ads, Or Destinations On Customer's Behalf." And: "CUSTOMER WILL CONTINUE TO BE SOLEY RESPONSIBLE..." They Also MASSIVELY Changed Their Liability And Arbitration & Mass Arbitration Clauses Throughout. I Guess So Much For The First Two Pillars That GOOGLE ADS WAS BUILT ON! And ALL Because Of DOGSH*T Ai . SMFH.
Breaking! Google Ads Updates Terms And Conditions For The Ai Era! Preparing Myself To Read Through This Anxiety & RAGE Producing Document And Accompany Links. Will Report Back If I Don't Die Of ANGER!!!!! LOL

Thanks Claudia Tomina for sharing! It’s fascinating to see the "preferred sources" feature rolling out as AI Mode and AI Overview. Giving users the control to prioritize specific domain-level publishers across Top Stories, Discover, and #AI answers is a huge step forward for personalized #search.

🔍 Testing Google's New "Preferred Sources" Feature Google just expanded its Preferred Sources documentation and brought the feature directly into AI Overviews and AI Mode. It gives users a way to choose specific domain-level publishers they want to see prioritized in Top Stories, Discover, and AI-generated answers. My source preferences so far are and in no particular order... 1. Ahrefs 2. Growth-memo 3. Whitespark 4. Sterling Sky 5. Near Memo 6. Search Engine Land 7. Reputation Arm - I have to keep an eye on how AI cites me. 8. I Pull Rank 9. Marie Haynes 10. Brightlocal Who am I missing?

For anyone thinking/writing/worrying about ‘Google Zero.’ It’s worthwhile to follow news cycle driven observations of folks like Kyle below. Or Claudio E. Cabrera, Shalom Goodman Candace Mitchell and other smart SEO-minded leaders with their eyes on the day-to-day tinkering with how AI summarization is pulling away from click through. That’s where the true clarity and tension between SEO and AEO is going to emerge.
I was initially encouraged by Google's introduction of publisher carousels to its AI features... now I have mixed thoughts. Take this evolution of a SERP on the Trump $250 bill. What began as publisher-dominated results as the news broke (admittedly, a Post exclusive) turned into an AI Overview by the afternoon. Yes, we're still featured in a citation and prominent carousel, but historically this type of news query would be untouched by AIO. So is Google's AI summarization starting to keep pace with news? Will it scale more broadly across hard news queries that had been largely shielded? And is the carousel introduction simplify a make-good so publisher clicks aren't decimated? More than a little curious how this goes.

Ranking #1 on Google means nothing if AI never mentions you. Search moved. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini now answer the questions your customers used to type into Google, and they cite only a handful of sources. If you're not one of them, you're invisible. That's the gap GEO closes. Swipe for the 2-minute version. Curious whether AI mentions your brand today? Most have never checked. You can, free. Link in the comments. #GEO #AEO #AISEO #SearchVisibility #EnGenius
